How we verify every station
6,396 listings, most of them checked against the chain's own published fuel data, not just word of mouth. Here is exactly how the directory is built, refreshed, and corrected.
The short version
Most listings on Pumpworthy come from the chains themselves. Large chains publish station-by-station fuel data through their own store locators, and where a chain marks a store as carrying ethanol-free gas, we list it and record the date we checked. Listings we cannot confirm through a first-party source come from driver reports and are reviewed by hand before they are published.
Every station page shows how that specific listing was verified and when it was last checked. When a source stops listing a station, we do not silently delete it; we re-verify first, because feeds have errors too.
Where the data comes from
Three sources, in order of how much of the directory they cover:
1. Chain locator data (most listings)
Major chains publish per-store fuel information: Marathon lists grades like "90 REC" and "Ethanol Free" per station, RaceTrac prices "Ethanol Free" as its own grade, Kwik Trip's fuel boards show "UNLEADED 87 (0% ETH)", and QuikTrip's store pages list every fuel type a store carries. We read these sources directly and list only the stores the chain itself marks as carrying E0. For Kwik Trip, that standard means we list 131 stores with an explicit zero-ethanol grade rather than hundreds of guesses based on marketing claims.
2. Driver reports
Some stations, mostly independents and brands without a usable locator, come from driver reports, including the long-running pure-gas.org community database. These are reviewed by hand before listing, and we prefer reports with recent activity. VP Racing locations are an example: each one was individually reviewed, and we corrected dozens of octane grades in the process.
3. Reports from people at the pump
Every station page has one-tap "Still sells E0" / "No longer E0" buttons. Those reports feed the correction queue below. If you find something wrong, that is the fastest way to fix it.
What "verified" means
The verification date on a station page is the date we last confirmed the listing against its source. We never bump a date without an actual check. When we correct a listing using crowd-reported data, the date deliberately stays put, because a crowd report is not the same thing as a source confirmation.
Listings where we have confirmed E0 but not the octane grade say so explicitly rather than showing a guessed number.
How the directory is refreshed
We periodically re-run every chain source and compare it against the live directory. Additions are straightforward. Removals are deliberately harder, because in practice most proposed deletions turn out to be data artifacts, not closed pumps. In one full refresh pass, roughly 190 deletions were proposed and only about a third were real.
- A network error during a check is not a delisting. Failed fetches suppress removals for that chain entirely.
- A single crowd report is not a delisting. When pure-gas.org delists a chain station, we cross-check the chain's own locator; in our audits, the chain usually still advertises E0 at that address.
- Where the chain publishes store numbers, we match on those rather than addresses, which drift between databases.
- Confirmed removals are deleted; ambiguous ones go to a manual review queue.

Corrections
Reports from station pages and the submission form are reviewed and applied in batches. A station reported as no longer selling E0 is re-checked against its source before anything is removed. Stations verified by hand as still selling E0 are protected from automated deletion even when a feed disagrees.
Known limitations
- Pumps change faster than any database. Always check the pump label before filling; the label is the truth.
- Some listings carry an unconfirmed octane grade, marked as such on the page.
- A few chains cannot currently be re-checked automatically, so their verification dates are older; the per-chain table above shows exactly how old.
- Some VP Racing locations sell canned ethanol-free fuel rather than pumping it. They are useful to small-engine owners, but they are not gas stations in the usual sense.
- Ethanol-free availability at a station does not guarantee every grade there is E0. Check the specific grade named on the station page.
